Why does BMI say I'm overweight when I'm muscular?

BMI divides your weight by your height squared, and that formula has no way to tell muscle from fat. Muscle is denser than fat, so a lean, heavily trained person can carry more weight in less volume and land in the overweight or obese band with a low body-fat percentage. The CDC describes BMI as a screening tool rather than a diagnosis, which is exactly the right way to read it: a flag worth checking against other measures, not a verdict on your health.

What BMI actually measures

BMI is one division: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. That is the entire calculation. A person of 175 cm and 70 kg has a BMI of 70 ÷ 1.75², which is 22.9.

Nothing in that formula knows what the weight is made of. It cannot see muscle, fat, bone density, or where on your body the mass sits. It was designed in the nineteenth century to describe populations, and it does that job well, which is a different job from describing you.

Why muscle pushes BMI into the wrong band

Muscle is denser than fat: the same mass of it occupies less space. Two people of identical height and weight, and therefore of identical BMI, can look and function completely differently, one carrying that weight as lean tissue and the other as fat.

Since BMI counts only the weight, added muscle moves you up the scale in exactly the same direction as added fat. A trained rugby player, sprinter or powerlifter can sit in the overweight or even obese band with a single-digit body-fat percentage. The number is not malfunctioning; it is answering the only question it was ever able to answer.

Who else does BMI misread?

Athletes are the famous case, but they are not the only one:

  • Older adults often lose muscle while gaining fat, which can hold BMI steady while body composition changes substantially underneath it.
  • Very tall and very short people are affected by the squared term, which does not scale perfectly across the full range of adult heights.
  • Pregnant people are outside what adult BMI describes altogether.
  • Children and teenagers need age- and sex-specific percentile charts, not the adult categories.

Population-level differences in body composition between ethnic groups also mean the standard cut-off points do not carry identical health implications everywhere, and some health authorities use adjusted thresholds for this reason.

What should I look at instead?

Nothing here replaces a conversation with a doctor, but the measures usually discussed alongside BMI are:

  • Waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio is cheap to measure at home and sensitive to where fat is stored, which BMI ignores entirely.
  • Body-fat percentage measures the thing BMI is used as a proxy for, though home methods vary a lot in accuracy.
  • How the number is trending matters: a BMI moving steadily in one direction over a year is more informative than a single reading against a threshold.

The CDC is explicit that BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnostic one. Read as a prompt to look further, it is genuinely useful. Read as a verdict, it is misleading for a large number of people.

Is BMI still worth calculating?

Yes, with the caveats above held in mind. It costs nothing, it is comparable across time and across sources, and for someone who is not especially muscular it tracks body fatness reasonably well at the population level.
